The majority of global liquid freshwater is stored in natural lakes and artificial water reservoirs. The presence of freshwater is essential for human settlements, industry, biodiversity, and agriculture and is influenced by various factors. Therefore, information about temporal and spatial open surface water distribution is essential in many disciplines. The “Global Water Pack” (GWP) accounts for this by providing daily water masks on a global scale. During this internship, the GWP was compared to other open-source water products on a global and European scale, with the aim of detecting similar or differing patterns in water detection algorithms.
From the abstract: Internship 2 – Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague at OpenSkyLab.Space :
Soil thermal and moisture conditions are key drivers of ecosystem processes. Obtaining reliable high-resolution data remains a major challenge. While drone-based thermal imagery appears to offer a straightforward solution, the results rely on numerous assumptions. Furthermore, thermal data is strongly influenced by vegetation emissivity, soil type, and changing atmospheric conditions. The team at OpenSkyLab.Space aims to quantify the impact of the above-stated parameters on thermal drone imagery acquired from DJI platforms. To address this, they link their measurements to various ground sensors and meteorological observations. During this internship, tasks ranged from teaching assistance and experiment preparation to literature review, data processing, and statistical analysis, providing a broad and diverse work experience.

EireR R package: unified gateway to Irish geospatial data

Anyone who's tried to do geospatial work across the whole island of Ireland knows the headache. Ireland is one island geographically, but it's split across two jurisdictions, the Republic and Northern Ireland, and each one runs its own data infrastructure. Different...

Impact of agrophotovoltaic facilities – an R package

There's a new R package on the block, and it's solving a problem that sounds simple until you actually try to do it: how do you tell whether putting solar panels over a farm field is good or bad for the soil and the crops around them? Marlene, one of our EAGLE...
