Inno Lab Report by Helena Wehner on January 23rd at 12:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, January 23rd at 12:30 Helena Wehner will present her inno lab report “Low-Cost UAV for Conservation in the Conservation area „Biosphärenreservat Rhön”” (seminar room 3, John-Skilton-Str. 4a).
Hosting Institution: Biosphärenreservat Rhön
Supervisors: Jonas Thielen, Biosphärenreservat Rhön Dr. Martin Wegmann, Department of Remote Sensing
From the abstract: Unmanned aerial vehicles are already highly included in conservation actions as well as monitoring. Thermal UAV do help detecting fawns before farmers mow their fields in summer. Nevertheless, thermal UAVs are rather expensive. Therefore flights can only be conducted in single areas, by people holding a EU A2 flying license. Conservation associations as well as communities are rarely able to cover those costs. We tested the usefulness of low-cost UAV (DJI Phantom 2) for monitoring animal pathways in snow in “Biosphärenreservat Rhön” as well as the detection of red kite nesting sites in winter during off breeding season.
