Our EAGLE Clara is doing her internship in the Arctic

Clara, an 8th gen EAGLE, is currently doing her internship in the Arctic. She spends 2 months in Longyearbyen on Svalbard where she works with colleagues from UNIS who are already collaborating with our EORC scientists, namely Dr. Bevanda. Clara works at the Arctic Biology department at UNIS, the University Center in Svalbard. She supports field work like drone flights and UAV data processing. Just last week they flew multispectral UAS missions over an area where snow buntings nest with the goal of getting an understanding of their nesting behavior and preferred breeding spots. She feels very fortunate to be able to go on field work in arctic regions, especially because it comes with an amazing view of the landscape and some special things to consider! This includes precautionary measures in case of a polar bear encounter, as well as adapting to the arctic climate. In the beginning, she still has the midnight sun, but towards the end of her stay in early October she will approach polar night and drone acquisitions will become more difficult. Then she will spend more time with desk-based work like compiling an overview over snow cover products and snow model validation over Svalbard. She stays at UNIS until the beginning of October before she continues with a a second internship at the Arctic University in Tromsø.
