EAGLE Internship Presentation “Gobabeb Namib Research Institute”

On October 21, 2025, Farimah Abdolzadeh will present her internship at ” Gobabeb Namib Research Institute ” at 12:30 in seminar room 3, John-Skilton-Str. 4a.

Farimah has just completed her internship at the Gobabeb Namib Research Institute, located in the heart of the Namib Desert, tthe world’s oldest and one of the most remarkable desert ecosystems.

During her time at Gobabeb, Farimah gained hands-on experience across a wide range of environmental research and monitoring projects. Her work involved maintaining weather and radiation monitoring stations, managing the FogNet network, conducting plant sampling (including the iconic !Nara plant), and supporting long-term ecological studies.

Fieldwork included adventurous quad bike rides across the desert to reach remote monitoring sites, from air sampling stations to biodiversity plots, and even week-long excursions to distant areas in search of unique plant species to sample.

Beyond the science, her internship offered a rare opportunity to live and work in an isolated desert environment, far from the city and surrounded by striking landscapes, unique wildlife, and a close-knit research community. It was an experience that blended scientific discovery, adventure, and personal growth.

She will share insights into her fieldwork, life at Gobabeb, and what it means to study ecology in one of the planet’s most extreme yet inspiring environments.
